Some buildings have characters of their own. The East Mill at Belper is one of these.
Magnificent at any time, but especially when bathed in the golden light of late afternoon…

I was watching the sunset develop and determined that I wouldn’t take a photo of this one as I take so many. It lasted so long and was so beautiful that in the end, I couldn’t resist…
Good job I did, as it was published in Derby Telegraph 🙂
We’re very lucky that we have such a wonderful view towards Derby from our garden. However, we also get to see things which aren’t so picturesque. We couldn’t work out quite what was happening on Friday evening around 5.30pm as the amount of dense black smoke seem to last for ever. But soon learned of this terrible fire via Facebook and Twitter.
Once the fire was out, there didn’t appear to be that much damage, but the Assembly Rooms are to be closed for 18 months whilst repairs are made…
This year Calke Abbey ran a photo competition, so the day before the deadline, I spent a very enjoyable afternoon taking photos of anything that caught my eye.
This was the most interesting – nectarine blossom in the Orangey.
The most beautiful wasn’t really in Calke Abbey, Staunton Harold Reservoir…
In the end I decided I didn’t have a strong enough image, so didn’t enter…
Everyone like cupcakes, or so I thought when planning my workshop for GoldsQuad at The Quad in Derby.
I used the outline to write words about cupcakes and so turned it into my favourite form of Calligraphy – a Calligram.
Was surprised that the best example produced was actually about not liking cupcakes. Great that it inspired those taking part to use my idea and make it their own!
A very enjoyable workshop, can’t wait to go back…
Great that the photography show has returned to the NEC this year. So much to see, so many workshops on offer…
I went on the first day as I wanted to see Rankin and thoroughly enjoyed his talk.

As well as the torrential rain we’ve had so far this year, recently we’ve also experienced some tremendous winds. Shining Cliffs is a lovely walk near Ambergate and walking through the woods, there was at least a third of its trees recently uprooted – such a shame…
I found a photo for the weekly photo challenge here for ‘Blue Sky Thinking’ and also ‘A Lonely Tree’…
This month’s challenge was an interpretation of ‘1000 Shades Of Grey’. You can imagine what came up when I ‘Googled’ it!
I ended up using paint shade cards and converting into black and white. Not the most original, but I probably spent the most time on it ever. Short anecdote – I visited a local DIY store and asked to borrow their professional shade card ‘block’ for the afternoon. The chap didn’t need any persuading – he said I looked like the kind of person he could trust!
If you look closely you’ll see the only word in focus is ‘grey’…
I joined Facebook as myself last week and straightway received an invitation to a ‘ladies only’ night at a studio. I was thrilled to say the least. David Severn was really helpful and as we were nearly all ‘studio virgins’, he talked us through camera settings and then we took it in turns to take photos with different lighting set ups.
Here is Erin with a black background, a beauty dish and small spotlight to the back of her head.

If anyone were to ask me what sort of photographer I want to be – I’d love to be a dance photographer. I love taking photos full stop, but taking photos of dancers is special because it makes up for the that fact that I’ve had to give up dancing due to health problems…
It was amazing to be able to take photos on two separate days, great fun, but really difficult as they were always moving and the room was quite dark.
I also got to see the finished performance which was very entertaining and very funny too… More of my pics on the Deda blog
